833 Second Place/223 East 9th Street
Langdon House
Built circa 1880, this Italianate house was developed by Job Male, the first mayor and developer of Plainfield. It has been listed as both 833 Second Place and 223 East 9th Street. The home was once owned by the Langdon family, who operated a lumber exporting business. Two of Charles Langdon’s business associates and pallbearers at his funeral were William S. Hofstra, of what is now Hofstra University in New York, and Alton Fauce, a paper dealer.
The house has a duplicate located at the corner of East 9th Street and First Place. This phenomenon was not uncommon in the area, as it was a development featuring semi-custom homes. Both houses share the same structural design, including brackets and porches typical of that period. However, smaller decorative elements, such as the window crowns and window placements, differ slightly. The interiors likely utilized different fireplace materials to avoid a cookie-cutter appearance in the homes.
