Janes House
Built circa 1880, this is a house by Job Male, who was the first mayor of Plainfield and one of the two developers in the Crescent Historic area. As you can see, the house features decorative brackets, ornate custom railings, and three different styles of bay windows. The back of the house includes a two-story sunroom, a design that appears to be common throughout the district. The original pony shed still remains at the rear of the property. There have been rumors that this house was constructed for his mistress so he could keep an eye on her while residing at 136 Crescent Ave. However, records indicate that this was actually built for Henry D. Janes, who worked in insurance in New York City. He was well-known as a dog fancier and owned several prize-winning St. Bernards.
