Smith Estate

Built circa 1880, this house was the residence of George R. K. Smith in 1895, and later became the home of C. Benson Wigton, who served as the Mayor of Plainfield from 1933 to 1934. George Smith was involved in the soap industry in New York City and is believed to have connections to Procter & Gamble. This property served as a weekend retreat for him and his family. During Benson Wigton’s ownership, he added a back door to a small study so he could facilitate quicker access to City Hall.  At one point, a prior owner extended the dining room to 30 feet in length to accommodate more than ten children. The home still retains its original carriage house, complete with a coachman’s loft above and a carriage step at the street.
