Burton House

Built circa 1890, this house is an excellent example of a custom fish-scale shingle and clapboard design. It was constructed for the Charles Burton family, involved in the oil industry in New York City. Herbert Stover, the wife of the resident at 248 East 9th Street, relocated to this home, where she would spend the remainder of her life. Herbert Stover was notably active in politics and ran for state senate in 1922 while still residing at the former homestead. The first floor features a Victorian grilled window, while the second and third floors showcase a colonial grill, illustrating the blend of architectural styles. The porch retains its original double columns and extends across the entire front of the house. This unique residence boasts an ogee-curved roof adorned with decorative brackets and scalloped millwork.
