Stover Homestead

This site was once the site of the Stover home. The original address was 40 East 9th Street, which was changed in 1893. On August 31, 1922, Herbert Stover filed the first Democratic petition for state senate, with John T. Daly of Rahway running for sheriff, John P. Owens as chairman of Plainfield’s Democratic committee, and signatories including John P. Evans of Plainfield, John T. Dunn of Elizabeth, and John J. Devine of Elizabeth. Herbert Stover was an insurance broker in both New York City and Plainfield. The current building reflects a new design from around 1926, but it remains unclear whether the original structure was demolished or simply remodeled to achieve its present appearance.
